Vashon Chamber Music concert
honors MLK
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, this
spiritually-themed program, third in the Series, offers Bach
cantata, "Ich habe genug," (I have enough) a wondrous piece for
baritone, oboe and strings. The German Baroque composer wrote
hundreds of cantatas during his tenure as a Kantor to reflect
readings from Lutheran liturgy.
The second half features pieces by living composers from Estonia
(Pärt) and Latvia (Pelecis). "Fratres," inspired by medieval
chant, refers to monks. "Flowering Jasmine" evokes deep emotion
and brings hope of spring to a wintry world. Telemann's Trio
Sonata in G Minor for violin and oboe, is considered one of
chamber music's most marvelous listening experiences.
The all-star cast includes: Andrew Krikawa, baritone; Stuart
Horn, oboe; English Horn player for Los Angeles Opera; Artur
Girsky, violin, Seattle Symphony; Karin Choo, violin; Michael
Werner, percussion; Principal percussionist of Seattle Symphony;
Gaye Detzer, violin; Heather Bentley, viola; Douglas Davis,
cello; Rowena Hammill, cello.
Additional tickets are available for this performance, thanks to
hospitality provided by Vashon Methodist Church.
